EXCELLENT'S FIELD

The Medical Oncology Unit of PTV assists the patient with neoplastic disease in a full manner using both current modalities and “innovative” therapeutic protocols, in case world-wide scientific literature has shown their superiority in comparison to the so-called “standard” therapy. Due to the complexity of neoplastic pathology, a close collaboration among various specialists is required; based on this principle the indication and the choice of both diagnostic and therapeutic procedure of a single patient are defined weekly during meetings termed “Working Oncological Group” (WOG), kept under different residencies specialists (oncologists, general surgeons, thoracic surgeons, ENT specialists, urologists, gynecologists, pathologists, radiologists and radiotherapists).

MEDICAL RESEARCH

National and International clinical trials are conducted in the Medical Oncology Unit of PTV; cancer patients can be admitted in these clinical protocols after adequate information and written informed consent. All ongoing clinical trials have obtained the formal approval of the PTV Ethical Committee.

MEDICAL'S EDUCATION

Oncologists at PTV are brought up to date both during the multidisciplinary meetings to decide single patients’ therapeutic procedure and in periodic scrutiny of international scientific literature. They participate like reporters and/or audiences to numerous conventions and oncological symposia and they also collaborate to the preparation and to the update of the didactic material used during various lectures kept at the School of Medicine of the University of Tor Vergata.

The control visits are booked calling the following number: +39(06)20903542 The outpatients' department service is placed to the fourth floor of the tower A. Reception and three visit rooms are available. This service is used for the first meeting to the patient, for periodical clinician-instrumental controls and for the oncological screening activity, in order to diagnose neoplastic diseases at early stage and therefore with greater chances of cure. The first visit and screening appointments are booked by RECUP phone number: 800.986.868. Periodic control visits can be booked by calling: +39(06)20903542 from Monday to Friday. The waiting time for a first visit or an oncological screening does not exceed seven days. The visits for periodic control will be booked in agreement with the referring physician.

Hospitalization

Three rooms, each one equipped with two automated beds, air conditioned, services, personal phones and television are available. Oncologists carry out activity from 8.00am to 7.00pm (Saturday from 8.00am to 04.00pm and Sunday from 8.00am to 1.00pm) and are always available by their portable phone. The nursery service is 24/24 hours available. Patients enrolled in experimental clinic trials or undergoing certain chemotherapies for which a continuous attendance is necessary, or patients with particular necessities (i.e. living outside Rome) are admitted to the Oncology Unit. Several activities are carried out: chemotherapies, supporting therapies, other specialists advisings, diagnostic examinations, psychological support. During their staying patients may: receive visitors, participate to religious celebrations, go to the various cafeterias after being authorized by nurses. The waiting-time before being admitted to the Oncology Unit is of approximately ten days.

Day Hospital

Five rooms, each one equipped with two automated beds, air conditioned, services, personal phones and television are available. Oncologists carry out activity from 8.00am to 7.00pm from Monday to Friday. The nursery staff is active from 8.00am to 8.00pm. Patient’s permanence at the day hospital unit is articulated in several daily accesses. Several medical activities are accomplished: chemotherapies, supporting therapies, other specialists advisings, diagnostic examinations, psychological support. At the end of the daily activities, patients return home and come back to the day hospital for the next access. The waiting-time for first day hospital access does not exceed seven days.
